About the Course
What happens when an ordinary table becomes a landscape of shapes, colors, and
unexpected relationships?
In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore painted-paper collage through observation
of a seasonal harvest table. Arranged with autumn fruits, vegetables, vessels, textiles, and
other gathered objects, the table will serve as a shared starting point for looking and making.
We'll begin by mixing colors and painting our own papers, creating a palette to work from
throughout the workshop. Participants will then explore the arrangement, selecting a particular
view, grouping of objects, or interesting relationship between shapes to translate into collage.
Through cutting, arranging, and layering painted papers, we'll explore composition, color, and
the possibilities of simplifying and transforming what we see. Rather than aiming for faithful
reproduction, we'll consider how color, shape, and spatial relationships can create an entirely
new image.
Participants will leave with one to three small painted-paper collages and a new way of
approaching still life through observation and invention.
No previous collage experience necessary.
